This move comes as other leading AI labs, including OpenAI, also reassess their partnerships with Mercor to determine the full extent of the breach.

Mercor is a key supplier of bespoke training datasets for companies like OpenAI and Anthropic. These datasets are critical to the performance of AI models (such as ChatGPT and Claude), and are therefore kept highly confidential. The risk isn’t just financial; leaked data could give competitors – including those in China – insights into training methods, giving them an edge in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
While OpenAI is investigating whether its proprietary data was exposed, the company insists that user data remains unaffected. Anthropic has yet to comment on the situation. A hacker group known as TeamPCP is suspected, though another group, Lapsus$, initially claimed responsibility. Security researchers believe the Lapsus$ claim is likely false, with TeamPCP being the primary actor.
TeamPCP has been gaining prominence through supply chain attacks and data extortion, with ties to ransomware groups. The group has also exhibited political motivations, deploying destructive malware in regions with ties to Iran.
