My teenage son didn’t set out to become a track star. He was just an accomplished soccer player looking to stay fit during the long New York winter. He joined the indoor track team with modest goals. But competition has a way of escalating. He trained like a demon. Two months of brutal high-intensity workouts later, his 1,600-meter time dropped so sharply he earned a spot in the sectional championships.

It was a big deal for him. It was nothing for everyone else.

At the race, my son gave it his all. He shaved seconds off his personal best and finished second-to-last. Meanwhile, the top three boys had already finished in well under four minutes and thirty seconds. By the time he crossed the line, exhausted and collapsed, the winner had already finished stretching. I had assumed this level of speed was new. It wasn’t. I dug up results from 2015. Back then, breaking 4:40 in the mile was rare. Now, it’s just a warm-up.

This phenomenon has a name: trackflation. And it is transforming the sport from the bottom up.

The New Normal at the Top

If you scroll through track social media lately, it feels like records are being shattered daily. A 12th grader in Ohio ran an indoor 2-mile in 9:37. A 10th grader in Texas hit 9.92 in the 100m. The data doesn’t lie. Median times and top-tier speeds have plunged since the late 200s.

Shyheim Wright, a former collegiate hurdler, captures this bewilderment well in his viral videos. “Pack it up! The times now are getting ridiculous,” he says, watching a ninth-grade girl from Georgia run 100m in 11.01. That’s faster than many college sprinters. At the June 2025 New Balance Nationals, over 100 kids broke meet records.

“Back when we competed, maybe 20 guys ran under 4:10,” says Will Rodgers of RunningLane. “Now? There might be 100.”

How Elite Youth Track Is Changing

The speed isn’t happening by accident. It’s the result of a perfect storm: specialized coaching, advanced gear, and a cultural shift in how young athletes train.

Take Henry Bartle and Gunner Hammett. Both 13 or 14, these eighth-graders compete at a level that used to be reserved for college professionals. In one 800-meter race, Hammett ran 1:57.75. Bartle finished in 2:03.52. An outrageously good time by any standard. But Bartle has grown used to falling short.

“Living in a time where a state record doesn’t even medal at Nationals,” he captioned a post after finishing six seconds off the podium at a previous event.

This maturity is new. Seven years ago, few eighth-graders trained with such intensity. Now, middle-schoolers are logging serious weekly mileage. The youth sports boom has hit track. Parents, tired of the politics and favoritism in sports like baseball or soccer, are flocking to track clubs. It’s objective. The stopwatch decides everything.

Why Young Runners Are So Much Faster

What’s driving trackflation? It’s not just harder training. It’s smarter, more expensive training.

1. Professionalized Coaching
Middle-school runners are doing workouts that high schoolers did a decade ago. “I ask middle-school girls to run eight 400s in 480 seconds,” says Brad Peterson of HP Distance. “Ten years ago? We played Capture the Flag.”

High schoolers now have access to private coaches who study pro workout videos or use AI to design plans. Some coaches preach “legal blood doping” via heat acclimatization—running on a treadmill next to a spaceheater to boost plasma volume. Others use double-threshold training, analyzing blood lactate levels between morning and afternoon workouts.

2. The Super Shoe Advantage
Almost everyone is wearing carbon-plated super shoes. Nike Vaporflys and New Balance SuperComps can return kinetic energy with every step. Proven to boost performance by 2-3%, they save roughly one second per lap. Sports physiologist Geoff Burns notes these shoes may also reduce trauma to young bones and muscles, allowing faster recovery and more strength building.

3. Nutrition and Supplements
Look at the trash at any meet. Empty tubs of Maurten Bicarb System. This sodium bicarbonate powder suppresses lactic acid, staving off fatigue. A meta-analysis suggests it can boost performance by 1.5%. It’s becoming as standard as water bottles.

The High Cost of Trackflation

This speed comes with a price. Financially and physically.

For those with money, the investment is steep. Families spend thousands flying to national meets with bouncy polyurethane tracks and pace lights. “If $2,000 opens a door to a better scholarship, it’s a good investment,” says Burns. But not everyone has that means.

There are also whispers of performance-enhancing drugs. With virtually no drug testing in high school, some coaches claim they can spot those using HGH or testosterone. “Parents are crazy,” says Timothy Goldsack. “They want that ticket to college.”

The system is also resource-light. Despite having over 1.1 million high school participants—more than any other sport—track is often treated as an afterthought. Many schools hire unqualified coaches who preach the old, harmful philosophy: “The more you hurt in practice, the more you hurt in the race.”

Today, that advice is outdated. The new generation knows better. They have the shoes. The coaches. The data. They are faster, stronger, and more optimized than ever before.

But as the times drop and the records tumble, you have to wonder: how long until the human body hits a wall? The kids keep running. And they keep breaking things.
