OpenAI Acquires Tech Stream ‘TBPN’ in Strategic Media Play

OpenAI, a leading artificial intelligence firm, has purchased “TBPN,” a popular technology and business-focused streaming show, for an undisclosed sum. The move signals a clear shift in OpenAI’s public relations strategy amid growing skepticism and outright fear surrounding the rapid development of AI. For over a year and a half, Silicon Valley executives have actively sought appearances on “TBPN,” hosted by John Coogan and Jordi Hays, known for their generally optimistic coverage of technological advancements.

The Rising Tide of AI Skepticism

The acquisition comes at a critical juncture. While the tech industry once enjoyed broad public curiosity about AI, sentiment is souring. Criticism now ranges from environmental concerns to fears of widespread job displacement, with prominent voices like Senator Bernie Sanders voicing strong reservations. OpenAI has taken notice of this shift. Fidji Simo, a key OpenAI executive, highlighted the show’s “marketing instincts” and expressed a desire to utilize the hosts’ influence to reframe the narrative.

A New Approach to PR

OpenAI recognizes that traditional PR methods are failing to address public anxieties. In an internal memo, Simo admitted that “the standard communications playbook just doesn’t apply” to AI. The company intends to leverage “TBPN” as a platform for “a real, constructive conversation” centered on the benefits of AI for developers and end-users. This suggests OpenAI believes that direct engagement with influencers and niche audiences will be more effective than broad media campaigns.

Maintaining Editorial Independence… For Now

“TBPN,” which employs 11 people, will maintain editorial independence while phasing out its advertising model. The show will now operate under OpenAI’s strategy division, reporting to Chris Lehane, the firm’s chief global affairs officer. This arrangement suggests OpenAI intends to influence, not control, the show’s content.

This acquisition marks a significant step toward proactive reputation management for OpenAI. Instead of passively reacting to public criticism, the company is investing directly in a media outlet capable of shaping the conversation around AI. The deal underscores the growing realization within the tech industry that controlling the narrative is just as important as building the technology itself.
